Before There Are Words
There are seasons in life where nothing feels entirely wrong, yet nothing feels fully right either. The person you once were no longer fits in the same way. The ways you once moved through the world no longer feel as natural, and the motivations that once drove you begin changing shape. Yet the future version of yourself has not fully emerged. You cannot return to who you were, but you cannot yet see who you are becoming.
This is the in-between phase.
A threshold between identities. A season of transition that can feel deeply disorienting while it is being lived.
The mind begins searching for explanations.
Why do I feel so disconnected?
Why can’t I see clearly anymore?
Why does everything feel suspended?
Why do I feel so different?
Yet transformation often unfolds long before visible evidence appears.
This is one of the most difficult aspects of the in-between phase.
Often a person finds themselves attempting to become the version of themselves that once knew how to navigate life, only to discover that something within can no longer return in the same way.
One of the strangest aspects of transition is that the strategies that once worked often stop working.
Pressure no longer creates motivation in the same way. Control no longer creates certainty. Achievement no longer creates fulfilment. The things that once produced movement may now produce exhaustion.
This is why the in-between phase often contains grief.
Not only grief around what has been lost, but grief around identities that can no longer be inhabited in the same way.
The individual can no longer fully return to who they were, yet they cannot fully become who they are becoming either.
This is often where the deepest disorientation lives.
Not in the ending.
Not in the beginning.
But in the space between.
The place where the old self loosens before the new self stabilises.
Others may only see stillness.
Yet internally, entire worlds may be rearranging themselves.
A tree does not stop growing because its roots disappear underground.
Some of the most important phases of growth occur beneath the surface long before visible evidence appears above the earth.
Human transformation often unfolds in much the same way.
Quietly.
Gradually.
Invisibly.
Sometimes life is simply reorganising itself faster than the mind can understand.
Perhaps the deepest invitation hidden within the in-between phase is not to rush toward certainty.
Not to force the next version of yourself into existence.
Not to demand immediate answers from a process that is still unfolding.
But to remain connected to yourself while clarity continues forming.
To learn how to stay present while identity evolves.
To soften enough to recognise that invisible movement is still movement. That transition is still movement. That uncertainty does not automatically mean misalignment and that unfamiliarity is not proof that you are lost.
Perhaps the in-between phase was never meant to be conquered.
Perhaps it was never a problem to solve.
Perhaps it is simply a season to be lived.
One breath.
One choice.
One uncertain step at a time.
